Most students take the SAT because they want to study in the United States. But the SAT quietly does something else that far fewer people talk about: it is one of the most widely portable admissions credentials in the world.

A single SAT score can be used to apply to universities in Türkiye, Italy, the Netherlands, Kazakhstan, the UAE, Hong Kong, Singapore, India, Egypt and dozens of other countries — often instead of that country's own entrance exam, and often with a lower published threshold than students imagine.

For a student in Tashkent, Baku, Cairo or Almaty, that changes the arithmetic completely. The same $111 test and the same three months of preparation open applications on three continents rather than one.

First, understand the three ways the SAT gets used abroad

Before you look at any number, you need to know what kind of requirement you are reading. Universities outside the US use the SAT in three very different ways, and confusing them is how students waste a year.

1. A hard minimum (a gate). The university publishes a number. Below it, your application is not read. Boğaziçi and Bocconi work this way. These are the easiest to plan around: you know exactly what you are aiming at.

2. A ranked score (a competition). The university converts your SAT into an internal ranking and admits from the top down. Meeting the minimum gets you evaluated; it does not get you in. Bocconi does both — a hard floor and a percentile-based ranking above it.

3. One accepted qualification among many (a door). The university accepts the SAT as an alternative to A-Levels, the IB, or a national exam, but publishes no score cutoff and decides holistically. The Math floor is the thing to notice. A 1350 built from 750 Reading and Writing + 600 Math does not qualify for Boğaziçi Engineering, even though the total clears the bar. If a Turkish engineering programme is your goal, Math section score is your primary metric, not your composite.

How to approach Turkish applications generally

• Every university sets its own quota, deadline and score table. Deadlines cluster in spring and summer, which means the March, May and June test dates are genuinely usable — unlike US applications, where you are effectively done by November.

Nazarbayev University (Astana)

Nazarbayev University accepts the digital SAT with a minimum of 1240 for undergraduate admission, alongside these alternatives:

English proficiency is separate: IELTS 6.0 overall (or equivalent TOEFL / UNT English benchmark).

This is one of the most useful numbers in this entire article for students in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. 1240 is an achievable score for a disciplined student with three to four months of structured practice — it sits close to the middle of the score distribution, not at the top. Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and the wider region

The picture here is more mixed and worth stating honestly rather than padding with names. International branch campuses and newer research universities in the region increasingly accept or actively administer the SAT, and some have begun running SAT sittings on their own campuses. But published, stable score tables are rarer than in Türkiye or Kazakhstan.

The practical advice for students in Uzbekistan and neighbouring countries:

1. Do not assume your local university needs the SAT. Many still use national exams. Check before you spend $111.
2. Do assume the SAT is your best regional passport. With one score you can apply to Türkiye, Kazakhstan, the Gulf, Europe and the US. Almost no other single credential travels that far.

Read that first number again: 1040. That is far below what most students assume a top European business school demands. But remember the second use-case from the top of this article — Bocconi converts your SAT into a percentile and ranks candidates. 1040 gets your file opened. It does not get you admitted. The realistic competitive range is far higher.

The "no superscore" rule matters for planning. If you take the SAT twice and score 1250 (RW 700 / M 550) then 1250 (RW 550 / M 700), Bocconi sees 1250, not 1400. Universities that superscore reward multiple attempts; universities that don't reward one strong attempt. Know which you are applying to before you plan your retakes.

The rest of Europe

Hong Kong and Singapore

The University of Hong Kong accepts SAT/AP as an international qualification type but publishes no fixed SAT cutoff — admission is based on academic performance together with interview, personal statement and references. The National University of Singapore similarly maintains standardised-test requirements for international qualifications that are revised annually.

For both, the honest guidance is: these are among the most competitive universities in Asia, admitting from a global pool. Treat the SAT as a component you want to be conspicuously strong — 1450+ — rather than a box you tick at a minimum. And check the current year's document on the university's own site, because these requirements are updated annually.

The Gulf

American-model universities across the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Bahrain — including the American University of Sharjah, the American University in Dubai and the branch campuses of US universities in Education City and Abu Dhabi — generally use SAT scores in admission and, importantly, in merit scholarship decisions.

Building your target score: a practical method

Here is how to turn all of this into a single number to aim at.

Step 1 — List every university you might realistically apply to. Include at least one in your own region, one in Türkiye or Central Asia, and one further afield. The SAT's value is that this list can be long at no extra cost.

Step 2 — Find each one's published requirement, on its own website. Not on a blog. Not on this page. Write down the number and the date you checked it.

Step 3 — Take the highest number on your list and add 60 points. That is your target.
