The confusion is understandable. All three are English-language exams. All three appear on university websites. All three cost money and take months to prepare for. So students reasonably assume they are alternatives, pick one, and get to work.
They are not alternatives. They measure different things, they answer different questions for an admissions office, and most universities outside your home country want both an academic test and an English test.
This guide sorts out which is which, what has changed in 2026, and how to decide what you actually need to sit.
The core distinction, in one paragraph
The SAT measures academic reasoning. It asks whether you can analyse a short text, reason with data, and solve algebra under time pressure. It is scored 400–1600 and it is used to compare you academically against everyone else applying — including native English speakers in the United States.
IELTS, TOEFL and the Duolingo English Test measure language proficiency. They ask a completely different question: is your English good enough to follow lectures, write essays and participate in seminars? They test listening and speaking, which the SAT never touches.
An admissions officer reading your file wants both answers. “Can this student handle our academic work?” and “Can this student handle our academic work in English?” One test does not answer both.
So do you need both? Usually yes Here is the honest general rule for international applicants:
You almost certainly need an English proficiency test if you are applying to a university where the language of instruction is English and your school was not English-medium. This is close to universal — US, UK, Türkiye, the Gulf, most of Europe’s English-taught programmes, Hong Kong, Singapore.
You need the SAT if the university requires or recommends it, which increasingly means: most competitive US universities, the international quota at Turkish universities, Nazarbayev University, many English-taught European programmes, and a growing set of institutions in the Gulf and Asia.
The common exemptions from the English test — and you should check each one against the specific university, never assume — are usually:
• You studied at an English-medium school for a required number of years (often three or four), and can prove it with a letter from the school
• You hold an IB Diploma or A-Levels taken in English
• You are a citizen of a country the university lists as English-speaking
• Occasionally, a high SAT Reading and Writing section score — but this is rarer than students hope, and never something to plan around
What a high SAT score does not do: it does not automatically exempt you from IELTS or TOEFL at most universities. Students in Egypt, Türkiye, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan regularly assume a 1400 SAT proves their English. To an admissions office, it proves your academic reasoning. Those are different files in the same folder.
What changed in 2026: TOEFL’s new scaleIf you are reading older guides — including most SEO articles written before this year — you will see TOEFL described as a 0–120 test. That is no longer how it works.ETS launched an updated TOEFL iBT score scale in January 2026. The test is now reported on a 1 to 6 scale in half-band increments, and the overall score is the average of the four section scores rounded to the nearest half band — not the sum, as it used to be.
The new scale maps directly onto CEFR levels:
• 6 = C2
• 5 to 5.5 = C1
• 4 to 4.5 = B2
• 3 to 3.5 = B1
• 2 to 2.5 = A2
• 1 to 1.5 = A1
During a two-year transition period running through January 2028, score reports also include a comparable score on the old 0–120 scale, so universities that have not yet updated their published requirements can still read your result. As rough anchors: a 5 on the new scale corresponds to roughly 95–106 on the old scale, a 4.5 to roughly 86 and above, and a 4 to roughly 72 and above.
Why this matters to you right now. Many university websites still list requirements like “TOEFL iBT 90.” If you sit the test today, your report says something like “4.5.” You will need to read the transition mapping to know whether you have met the requirement, and in borderline cases you should email the admissions office and ask which scale they are using for your application year. Do not assume. This is the single most common avoidable error in English-test planning in 2026.
The three English tests compared
IELTS Academic is scored on the familiar 0 to 9 band scale, in half bands, with four sections — Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking — averaged into an overall band. It has the widest and longest-established recognition, particularly in the UK, Australia, Canada and across Europe. Its speaking test is conducted with a human examiner, which some students find far easier than speaking into a microphone and some find far harder. Know which kind of student you are before you choose.
TOEFL iBT now uses the 1–6 scale described above, is entirely computer-delivered, and remains especially well recognised in the United States. Speaking is recorded rather than conversational. If you are more comfortable answering a prompt into a headset than sitting across from an examiner, TOEFL suits you better.
The Duolingo English Test is cheaper, shorter, taken at home, and returns results in about two days. Its acceptance has expanded enormously, but it remains less universally accepted than IELTS or TOEFL — and acceptance is often programme-specific rather than university-wide. It is an excellent option when your target universities accept it and a wasted fee when they do not. Check each university’s list before booking, not after.
A rough equivalence, useful for planning only: an IELTS band of 7 corresponds roughly to a TOEFL total of 5 on the new scale; IELTS 6.5 corresponds roughly to TOEFL 4.5. Universities publish their own equivalences and theirs override any table you read online, including this paragraph.
What score do you actually need?
For English tests, the typical undergraduate thresholds you will encounter:
• Most English-taught programmes: IELTS 6.0–6.5 overall, or TOEFL around 4 to 4.5 on the new scale
• Competitive universities: IELTS 7.0, or TOEFL around 5
• Highly selective US universities and some UK programmes: IELTS 7.0–7.5, often with minimum sub-scores per section
That last point catches people. An overall IELTS 7.0 built from Listening 8.5, Reading 8.0, Speaking 6.5 and Writing 5.0 will fail a university that requires a minimum of 6.5 in every band. Check whether your universities set section minimums, and if they do, your weakest section is your real score.
For the SAT, the thresholds vary by destination, and there is no single “good score.” A useful summary: 1200–1300 clears published minimums at a meaningful set of universities outside the US; 1350–1450 makes you competitive and opens scholarship bands; 1500+ is the working target for the most selective institutions worldwide.
How to sequence the two tests. This is where students waste the most time.
A workable order:
Step one: find out what each university on your list requires. Not what you assume, not what a forum says — the university’s own admissions page, with the date you checked it written down. Note the SAT requirement, the English requirement, whether section minimums exist, and whether any exemption applies to you.
Step two: take the English test first if your English is the weaker of the two. English proficiency improves slowly and steadily; SAT scores improve quickly with technique. If you sit IELTS or TOEFL early and score well, you can spend your remaining months entirely on the SAT with no anxiety about the language requirement.
Step three: take the English test second if your English is already strong. If you are already comfortably at B2 or C1, the English test is a formality you can slot in later. Spend your prime preparation months on the SAT, where technique yields real point gains.
Step four: never prepare for both in the same month. They demand different modes of work. SAT preparation is pattern recognition and timed accuracy. English test preparation is production — speaking and writing at length. Interleaving them badly usually produces two mediocre results instead of two good ones.
Step five: leave buffer. English test results typically arrive within one to two weeks; SAT scores for the autumn 2026 dates arrive around 13 days after test day, although College Board’s own guidance allows for two to four weeks. Both need to reach the university before its deadline, and neither can be rushed for free.
A common trap: the “one test” plan
There is a version of this decision that goes badly every year. A student in Tashkent or Cairo decides that since their target university lists both requirements, they will focus everything on the SAT, get a strong score, and “deal with IELTS later.” Later becomes December. The nearest IELTS date with seats is in January. The application deadline is January 5.
The application is incomplete, and an incomplete application is not a weak application — it is not an application at all.
Book both test dates in the same week that you decide to apply. The order of preparation is flexible. The order of booking is not.
Frequently asked questions
Can a high SAT score replace IELTS or TOEFL?
At most universities, no. A minority will waive the English requirement for a sufficiently high SAT Reading and Writing section score, but this is a specific published policy, not a general rule. Check each university individually and never build a plan on the assumption.
Which English test is easiest?
The one that matches how you perform. IELTS uses a live examiner for speaking; TOEFL records you; Duolingo is adaptive and taken at home. Students who freeze in conversation often do better on TOEFL; students who go blank in front of a microphone often do better on IELTS. Difficulty here is personal, not objective.
Is the Duolingo English Test accepted everywhere?
No. Acceptance has grown a great deal but is still narrower than IELTS or TOEFL, and is sometimes limited to particular programmes within a university. Verify on the university’s own page before you pay.
