The SAT is designed to evaluate a student's readiness for college by testing skills in key academic areas. Here’s a breakdown of the subjects covered:

1. Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW)

This section assesses your ability to read, comprehend, and analyze written material, as well as your understanding of grammar and language conventions. It is divided into two parts:

  • Reading Test:
    • Comprehension of passages from literature, historical documents, social sciences, and natural sciences.
    • Focus on understanding main ideas, interpreting data, and analyzing the author’s tone and purpose.
  • Writing and Language Test:
    • Grammar, punctuation, and usage.
    • Improving sentence structure and style.
    • Analyzing content for consistency and effectiveness.

2. Math

The Math section evaluates problem-solving skills, mathematical understanding, and the ability to apply concepts to real-world scenarios. It covers:

  • Algebra: Linear equations, inequalities, and systems.
  • Problem-Solving and Data Analysis: Ratios, percentages, and interpreting graphs and tables.
  • Advanced Math: Quadratic equations, polynomials, and functions.
  • Additional Topics: Geometry, trigonometry, and complex numbers (to a lesser extent).

The Math section includes:

  • A calculator-allowed portion.
  • A no-calculator portion.

3. Optional Essay (Discontinued after 2021 by most testing centers)

Previously, this section required students to analyze a provided passage and write an essay explaining how the author built their argument. While most colleges no longer require the SAT essay, check with your target schools to confirm their policies.

The SAT focuses on skills essential for college and career success. Understanding the subjects covered helps you target your preparation and maximize your score. With consistent practice and a clear strategy, you can excel in each section of the test.
